Waipapa Road stage 3 widening FNDC

  • Extent of works: To widen the existing road creating a cycle lane and foot path
  • Contract price $1’777’720.00
  • 1.2kms (12’550m2) widening, foot paths, cycle lanes.

Tarmac NZ carried out the upgrade of Waipapa road widening contract for the Far North District Council, This work included Tarmac installing its own traffic control systems with their traffic controllers that look to bring innovative ways to the traffic control set ups to allow less disruption to motorists passing through the site.

This project included over 4500m3 of cut to waste/ fill earthworks lowering the roads height to allow for over land flooding during 100 year flooding.

Once all earthworks were completed Tarmac laid 1.2km’s of 450mm dia. concrete culverts up the road carriageway, laying on average of over 100m of pipe per day as well as manholes.

Pavement construction included importing of 10’000m3 of aggregate. Tarmac’s pavement crew were running in 500-600 m3 per day building up the pavement to the design levels required. Tarmac’s stabilising crew then moved in milling the 1.2kms of road over 2days. We then started the process of finishing the pavement off shapping and trimming the road to create a smooth pavement finish.

Once the road surface had been finished to a high level Tarmac applied a 2coat bitumen seal to the road allowing the pavement makings to be applied and the road handing back over too FNDC
